Fun! The past couple of years I've made our front-door wreath with clippings from our Christmas tree and I've loved doing that. But, as for food... my favorite to prepare is probably apple pie. I'm pretty good at it, I've been told - I've sold some for $15+ each. I enjoy seeing how thinly I can slice the apples, and making the pie 'pretty.' So, yeah, I guess that's my favorite to prepare. :)
ReplyDeleteI have two favorite things that I like to make for the holidays. First up is Paula Deen's pretzel salad, with the baked pretzel crust, cream cheese and whipped frosting in the middle, and then strawberry jello with strawberries on top. Not light in calories, or very original, but it tastes sooooo good! The second dish that I love to make is my Mom's Italian stuffing for Thanksgiving. Lots and lots of italian sausage, basil, garlic with chunks of really good bread-yum!
ReplyDeleteFrom the time my girls were little, we used to have Christmas cookie decorating night. When they grew up and became moms we turned into Christmas baking night. I still love to make and decorate Christmas cookies. That will always be my favorite thing to do. Now, I have grandkids that we can pass along the decorating fun to.
ReplyDeleteI love contests, and I love cooking for the holidays!! I think my favorite thing to make during the holidays is good 'ole cajun rice dressing!!! Plus decorating cookies with the kids.
ReplyDeleteCool! Contests are so much fun! I love making Christmas cookies with my kids. It's my great grandmother's sugar cookie recipe and then we break out the frosting and sprinkles and let all the kids decorate them, it's messy and so much fun, and it's a family tradition.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE putting my christmas tree up. I put it up about a week before Thanksgiving. I always watch Christmas Vacation while putting it up. I am already excited about it, lol.
Hi! The woman in my family have an annual cookie swap. We decide ahead of time what we are going to bake. We make one dozen for each person that is participating. We meet for coffee and goodies a few weeks before Christmas and swap! It is fun and we all get at least a dozen different types of cookie.
ReplyDeleteGreen bean casserole and corn casserole!
ReplyDeleteI forgot to add cornflake wreaths with the green food coloring and red hots for the berries!!! Woo! Those are the best!
ReplyDeleteCrap--I posted comment in the wrong place--Thing to prepare for the holidays? My mind for the disfunction--now make me a purse sista!! lol
ReplyDeletePS It was a nervous laugh!!
My favorite holiday food is Apple pie with carmel vanilla ice cream. I have a secret pie crust recipe and it's awesome! It makes the house smell great too.
ReplyDeleteMy mom also does a traditional swedish dinner on Christmas Eve. She makes the BEST Swedish meatballs and corn pudding... yum!
My favorite way to prepare for the holidays is to keep my ipod filled up with new songs and battery always charged, right by the door.
ReplyDeleteThis way when I go out, I make sure to bring it and not have to listen to awful Christmas tunes that seem to imply I should be jolly.
I'm not. I hate Christmas.

ReplyDeleteI love Christmas...my all time favorite holiday. I have Spode Christmas dishes and I can't wait to get them out...
My favorite thing to make for the holidays is Peacan Pie....I never make them otherwise cause it is alot of trouble...I'm not much of a baker....I also love the side dishes I always make..creamy corn...(whole kernal corn and cream cheese with chives), and homemade rolls....YUMMY...this is making me hungry!
sorry meant pecan...comments need spell check
ReplyDeleteMy favorite dish (and the one I am required to bring) is a broccoli, fungus & cheese dish. YUM! I lovingly call mushrooms fungus. I had to get creative last year though cause Kraft quit making those garlic cheese logs. I used a couple of those in the sauce. I did find a link where you used cream cheese, cheddar and garlic powder/salt to create the same flavor. Oh well what is another 30 minutes on a very time consuming recipe. Stinkin Kraft people!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband usually has to have the couthern corn casserole. You take shoepeg corn, cream of celery, sour cream, tons of cheddar cheese and mix it then top it with ritx crackers crushed and sopping with butter and bake.
Then there is the hot pineapple dish he also has to have.
To make with the grandkids: you know the peanut butter cookies with a chocolate kiss in the center? Make reindeer with red m&m's for the noses, chocolate chip eyes, broken tiny pretzels for the antlers. You have to work fast to get everything on while the cookie is warm. And don't forget to eat all the green m&m's left in the package!
ReplyDeleteI've only been cooking for a year so nothing to offer in that department ;) I not really a "holidays" person but ever since I had kids I'm getting merrier and merrier every year.
ReplyDeleteOur family likes to decorate the premade gingerbread houses with candy and royal icing. We always take a picture of the finished product. It is funny now to look back at how they looked when my daughter was younger.

Love to make my grandma's potato side dish (with cornflakes on top, of course!) Lots of fat, but sooo good.
ReplyDeleteLindsay (from OHIH)
I love making hard tack candy. I like to make a bunch of different flavors and put them all in a jar with powered sugar... then give the jars to people as little gifts.
ReplyDeleteFavorite thing here? Everything is better with bacon, including Chex Mix. :-D

I make a few "regular" things....
ReplyDeleteFirst, I make Ranch-flavored Oyster crackers...I get in trouble if I don't make those.
Then, I have to make Sausage-Cheese bisquits for the get togethers at my mom's house.
Then there is the traditional Chex Mix.
Hubby got in the holiday mode a couple of weeks ago and asked me to make all of the holiday "regulars"....this house smelled like Christmas! LOL!

We like to make sticky buns for the holidays. Truly easy but devastatingly delicious!!! Get the frozen rolls in a bag I think they are Rhodes. They usually come in packages of 36 I think. You take 16 and put them in a greased bundt pan and sprinkle with a box of Cook N Serve pudding..we usually use butterscotch...melt butter with brown sugar and pour evenly over the rolls then set aside for the night to let it rise...in the morning toss it in the oven at I believe 375 for 25 minutes. When browned on the top take out and immediately flip over on a pan and try scraping out all the carmelized goodness out of the pan....Be sure to soak the pan in hot water ASAP!! Let cool and ENJOY!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing to make is sugar cookies with my kids. My mom always cut out sugar cookie dough for us to decorate and I carried that tradition on with my kids.
ReplyDeleteI miss Christmas so much at my mom's house. Since my husband is in the army, we haven't been home for Christmas in 7 years. My mom has a buffet spread all day long on Christmas day. She starts working on it a month in advance. There is every sweet you can imagine: snowballs, Mexican wedding cookies, divinity, chocolate pizza, sugar cookies, fudge, individual cheesecakes, pumpkin log, and so many more that I'm not even doing it justice. Needless to say we went to bed Christmas night with quite the stomachache! LOL!
My favorite holiday thing to make is our annual gingerbread house. More candy gets eaten then added, and the candy that DOES make it on is snuck of piece by piece by the little "elves" over time!! We always have a great time making this!
ReplyDeleteLove love love the holidays. Black Friday is decorating day here. NO shopping allowed!! It takes all day to get the boxes out. We put up 9, yep 9, trees, a Dept. 56 village on top of my kitchen cabinets, and a Coca Cola Town Square village collection on the shelves that round my family room. Outside is white lights on the roof and white lights/garland draped on the fencing that surrounds our backyard. I wish it was November now!
ReplyDeleteI do all the chocolate and cookies a few fav. are coconut clusters and pretzels. The kids are all older now but still want to do sugar cookies.
